The club was founded on 10 May 1889, after a notice in the Hong Kong Daily Press invited "gentlemen interested in the royal and ancient game" to a meeting at the Hong Kong Club. It played first in Happy Valley, shared with everything else the colony did outdoors, moved to a nine-hole course at Deep Water Bay in 1898, and then to Fanling in the New Territories, where the eighteen-hole Old Course was completed in 1911.
A lease of thirty acres at Beas River in 1968 let the club expand the Eden into a full championship course; there are now sixty-three holes. The "Royal" in the name was dropped in 1996, ahead of the handover. The Old Course, 6,246 yards through old camphor trees, is the home of the Hong Kong Open, co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours.
