Members call it Seaton, after the suburb the club moved to in 1906. Golf in Adelaide had started earlier and failed: a club formed in June 1870 and folded around 1876. The present club was founded on 11 August 1892 by 32 members who met at the Largs Pier Hotel, and the Seaton links opened on 30 June 1906. King George V granted the Royal prefix in 1923. Nine Australian Opens have been played here; Gary Player won in 1962 and Greg Chalmers took the last of them in 1998. The Women's Australian Open has come three times, to Annika Sörenstam in 1994, Jang Ha-na in 2017 and Inbee Park in 2020.
Alister MacKenzie visited in 1926 and pushed the club to build its holes into the sand dunes rather than around them; the course still runs through them. It measures 6,572 metres from the blue tees, about 7,187 yards, rated 74 with a slope of 133. The hole worth an argument is the third, a par four of 269 metres from the blue tee. That is inside driver range for a long hitter and well outside it for everyone else, so the tee shot is a decision before it is a swing. The course record, a 63, was set by the American Marty Bohen in the last round of the 1977 South Australian Open.
