- The Open (1931, 1937, 1953, 1968, 1975, 1999, 2007, 2018)
The first course here was ten holes laid out by Allan Robertson with Old Tom Morris in 1842, crossing and recrossing the Barry Burn. Morris stretched it to eighteen in 1867, and James Braid's changes in 1926 made it a championship course: the Open came in 1931 and has returned seven times since. Ben Hogan won here in 1953, Tom Watson in 1975, Francesco Molinari in 2018.
The Championship Course is public and measures 6,941 yards from the regular back tees, 7,402 for the 2018 Open. The burn is still the point of it. It winds through the last holes and crosses the eighteenth twice, which is why three of the last four Opens here went to a playoff, and why the 1999 finish is still talked about.
