WM Phoenix Open (annually since 1987)

For one week a year, temporary grandstands seating 20,000 close a single par three in on every side. The 16th plays 163 yards from the black tees and is the only fully enclosed hole on the PGA Tour, which is where the name The Coliseum comes from. Twelve players have holed out there through 2025, Tiger Woods in the third round in 1997 among them. Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish built the course for the PGA Tour to be watched, and the 16th is the hole that idea produced.

The Stadium Course opened in 1986, and the Phoenix Open moved here from Phoenix Country Club in 1987. It has not left since. Recent winners include Scottie Scheffler in 2022 and 2023, Nick Taylor in 2024, Thomas Detry in 2025 and Chris Gotterup in 2026. The Champions Course, finished in 2007, replaced the original Desert Course, also by Weiskopf and Morrish. The hole after the Coliseum is the opposite kind of theatre: a par four of 332 yards from the black tees, short enough that the tee shot becomes a choice rather than a routine. Two numbers give the scale of the week: in 2016 the tournament drew 201,003 people on the Saturday and 618,365 across the week.
