The Ocean Course was added to the Kiawah Island resort in 1991, at the eastern end of an island thirty miles southwest of Charleston, and hosted the Ryder Cup the same year, the match remembered as the War by the Shore. Pete and Alice Dye designed it, and it was built so that the sea is in view from every hole, which also means the wind is on every hole.
It is 7,876 yards, par 72, with big slopes, many bunkers and Bermuda grass, and in 2010 Golf Digest named it the toughest course in America. The PGA Championship was played here in 2012 and again in 2021. It appears in the film The Legend of Bagger Vance, and is an Audubon-certified sanctuary for the birds that live in the dunes.
