The land was an abandoned airfield, Camp Haven, and later the site of a nuclear power station that local opposition stopped before it was built. The Kohler Company bought it and had Pete and Alice Dye build a links on two miles of Lake Michigan shore, with eight holes on the lake, about eighty feet of elevation change, stone bridges and a flock of Scottish Blackface sheep. There are few trees, and the wind comes straight off the water.
The Straits Course is 7,790 yards, par 72. It has hosted three PGA Championships, in 2004, 2010 and 2015, the 2007 U.S. Senior Open, and the 2021 Ryder Cup, which the United States won 19 to 9. A second course, the Irish, plays inland.
