Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts founded the club in 1932 on 365 acres of a former plant nursery called Fruitland, and Jones designed the course with Alister MacKenzie. It is a winter club, closed from late May to mid-October, and unlike most private clubs it is a for-profit company that publishes neither its membership nor its accounts. Since 1934 it has hosted the Masters, the only one of the four majors played on the same course every year.
The course is 7,510 yards, par 72, and its ground moves more than television suggests: long slopes on the fairways, greens that run away from the approach, and the low corner around Rae's Creek at the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth that every April decides the tournament. The trees and flowering shrubs are the nursery's legacy.
