The Players Championship, every year since 1982

The course opened in the autumn of 1980 on 415 acres of Florida swampland a mile from the Atlantic, land the Fletcher family sold to the PGA Tour for one dollar; the cheque hangs in the clubhouse. It was the first Tournament Players Club and is the Tour's home course, built to host the Players Championship, which it has since 1982. Pete and Alice Dye designed it as a stadium: the spectators sit on grass mounds, and the mounds hold 36,000.

Narrow fairways between marsh and unraked waste bunkers, dozens of pot bunkers, palms in the way, and greens that are hard and fast. The seventeenth is a par three of 137 yards to an island green, the most photographed hole in the game and one of the shortest. From the back tees the course is 7,245 yards, par 72, with a slope of 155.
